CDV of an unidentified three-masted navy frigate. Written in period ink on verso is, “Jane Miller / From / Thomas Miller / April 12th 1863.” The vessel could represent either the Potomac-class or Sabine-class, although there are only sixteen guns on the visible side, fewer than the Potomac's or Sabine's normal complement. Oddly, the becalmed ensign at the ship's stern does not appear to be the familiar stars and stripes, rather the ensign of the Royal Navy. Still, the style of the ...date inked on verso, month and then day, follows the American colloquial versus English. No photographer’s imprint. Excellent condition, but for being trimmed on the ends and corners. Measures about 3 3/4” x 2 1/2”.Please see my other items for more Civil War CDVs.
