On offer, we have an antique grotesque dwarf figurine. He is styled after the 18th century London dwarfs who were paid to walk the mansion districts of London wearing advertisements, usually on their large hats. Known as the "Mansion House Dwarves" or "Grotesque Dwarves" these were inspired by the series of engravings of Jacques Callot in his work titled "Les Gobbi" that featured hunchback grotesque dwarfs. The figurines were first made by by Derby in the Staffordshire reg...ion in around 1785. We date our dwarf to circa 1900. He is advertising card playing on the back of his shirt, perhaps for a gambling club? Finely crafted in pearlware, he is hand painted in bright gaudy colors. Our dwarf measures 6 1/2" tall, approximately 4" wide and stands on a 2 1/4" X 2 1/2" round base. He weighs 14.8 ounces. This dwarf is in extraordinary condition with no cracks or repairs. He has some chipped paint on his base, back, under his hat on the edges and his left shoe. The glaze under his base has some crazing.
