Born into a well to do family, YevondePhilone Middleton Cumbers “took up photography with the definite purpose ofmaking myself independent”, and became a lifelong supporter of women’sr...ights. After an apprenticeship toLallie Charles she set up her own studio at the age of 21. Madame Yevonde isbest known as a pioneer of colour photography particularly the Vivex processtypified by her 1935 “Goddesses” series which had been inspired by a societycharity ball with an Olympian theme. Madame Yevonde was published in societymagazines in the UK and commissioned by Fortune magazine in the States, and wasmuch in demand for advertising work. 1939 brought a double blow with the deathof her husband and also the closure of the Vivex manufacturing plant. She didnot return to colour photography but continued working in black and whitealmost until her death in 1975.
