Francis P. Blair, (1821-1875), was born in Ky.; Moved to St. Louis in 1842, where he practiced law; Took part in Gen. Kearny's Santa Fe expedition during the Mexican War; Civil War Major General, he commanded a Division at Vicksburg under Gen. Sherman and took part in Sherman's March to the Sea, ending up as a Corps Commander in the final campaigns in Georgia and the Carolinas; Served in the U.S. Congress ...from Missouri, 1857-1859, and 1861-1864 (though he supposedly resigned his seat in 1862 to lead troops in the war, he never formerly resigned); Running mate of Horatio Seymour in the 1868 Presidential election against U.S. Grant; his virulent racist speeches during the campaign were blamed by some as the reason for Seymour's defeat.
