CDV photo of U.S. Navy Officer William Henry Whiting, (1843-1925), graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1863, and served as an Ensign on Admiral Farragut's flagship, the U.S.S. Hartford, where he was commended for exceptional service by Farragut for his actions during the Battle of Mobile Bay, when he was in charge of the forecastle guns during the battle. In 1878, he was the Executive Officer of the U.S.S. Constitution - "Old Ironsides" - when it transported the American Exhibits ...for the Paris World's Fair - at which time this photograph was taken in Paris. Served in the Spanish American War as a Captain; Retired from the Navy as Rear Admiral in 1905. The photo shows Whiting in his Naval Officer's uniform. Photographer's imprint of "Messier", Paris, France. The mount is slightly trimmed at the sides, and there is a small stain at the bottom of the mount. The photo is Very Fine.
