The script on the bottom back part of the knocker Identifies the men by name - it says "Bill Brewer, Jan Stewer, Peter Gurney, Peter Davy, Dan’l Whiddon, Harry Hawk, Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all". Legend has it the song, “Widecombe Fair, ” was first recorded by the Reverend Sabine Baring-Gould in 1890 in his book “Songs of the West”. However different versions have been around long before. "Widdecombe Fair" is the original spelling but now the accepted spelling is "Widecombe" after the town Widecombe-in-the-Moor.
It has two holes to attach it to the door (screws are not included).
