Rare 19th century yellow ware pitcher bust of the Duke of Wellington. Marked THOMPSON on bottom. This appears to be made by Thompson in East Liverpool, Ohio in the mid 19thcentury commemorating the death of the Duke of Wellington. James Bennet, an immigrant from Staffordshire, England, set up a pottery in Ohio in 1839. Troubles in the English North Staffordshire Stoke on Trent area potteries encouraged more immigration and the growth of Ohio Staffordshire, making wares comparable in st...yle and quality to what they were doing in England. Rare to find a signed piece. Thompson remained in business till the 1930s, making everyday dinnerware, but early pieces such as this are uncommon, especially signed.5" x 5 1/2" across handle, 8" high. Dirt on bottom of interior which I have not cleaned, some usage wear and slight area of flaking on bottom rim, otherwise nice condition with no chips, damage, or repair. Shipping USA only.
