Alfred Eisenstaedt was a German-born American photographerand photojournalist. He began his career in Germany prior to World War II butachieved prominence as a staff photographer for Life magazine after moving tothe U.S. Life featured more than 90 of his pictures on its covers, andmore than 2, 500 of his p...hoto stories were published. From his early years asprofessional photographer he became an enthusiast for smal 35mm cameras, especially the Leica camera. Unlike most news photographers at the time whorelied on much larger and less portable 4"×5" press cameras withflash attachments, Eisenstaedt preferred the smaller hand-held Leica, whichgave him greater speed and more flexibility when shooting news events orcapturing candid shots of people in action. His photos were also notable as aresult of his typical use o natural lightf as opposed to relying on flashlighting. In 1944, Life described him as the "dean of today's miniature-cameraexperts."Of this photo he said : “In Italy, I photographed a galaevening at La Scala. This was one of my first pictures with a Leica on atripod. Suddenly I saw a lovely young societygirl sitting next to an empty box. From that box I took this picture, with thegirl in the foreground… Without the girl I would not have had a memorablepicture.”
