SMALL ORNATE CLAY TOBACCO PIPE - GREAT PATINA ca. 1650This is a small ornate Ott0man white clay pipe bowl with ornate moulded design to bowl, collar and base, the base has a loop for attachment to a string.Measures 51.75 mm long, 30.38 mm high, Smoking bowl 26.63 mm in diameter, small rod bowl 20.29 mm approx.Weighs 21.3 grams.Condition - Solid condition with no repairs, losses to both bo...wl and rod hole collar edge, great for 369 years old.Turkish makers of ceramics pipes made their first pipes(17th century) of white and grey clay.To pay tribute to the European fashion, the Ottomans triedto make stems long and narrow as they made them in the West.But the “European tradition” did not settle down in the OttomanEmpire. So the Turkish craftsmen had to choose the WesternAfrican variant of a tobacco pipe which they slightly restyledafter the European fashion. As a result, they created aconglomerate of the “Oriental” and “Western” (European) pipesthat these days is called the “Turkish”, or the Ottoman, pipe.Later (the end of 17th and the beginning of 18th centuries)the Ottoman craftsmen began using in pipe manufacture socalled “red” clay widespread in Asia Minor, the Crimea andBalkans. That is the reason why practically all “late” pipes wereof brown or beige clay.
