Original Description:
Mid/late 19th century sampler by Rachel Farrow aged 11 - 1879. Worked in red wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters and numbers, whilst the middle section is stitched with a central plaque which contains the following verse
Help me O Lord to do thy willAs long as I have breathKeep every wayward passion stillAnd be my guide till deathFor thou wilt always be a friendW...ho love and serve thee to the end
The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a narrow diamond edged plaque which contains Rachel's details and the date of 1879.The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with the odd small, faint stain and a small patch of old glue residue on the bottom left edge. The red of the thread is good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colour would have looked when Rachel first stitched it.Measures 12 3/4" x 16 1/2"
