Small early/mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Salmon Harden aged 10. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1840 or slightly earlier. Worked in blue and red wool on a close weave cotton gauze, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with Elizabeth's name and age beneath. There is a cluster of six tiny cross...es beneath Elizabeth's details which have floral motifs and a bird on top of a tree to their left and right. The middle section of the gauze is stitched with a central rosebush which has a dog, floral motif, bird and flower to each side which in turn have a flower and flower basket above them. There is a stag beneath the central rosebush with a flower, crown, flower basket and red lion to each side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central flower which has a crown and rose to each side and a floral motif below flanked by a blue bird and flower basket. There is a tree standing at the centre of the bottom edge of the gauze with a bird. flower, diamond and floral urn to each side. The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a sprinkling of brown marks in the upper section and a few small, faint stains elsewhere. The colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Elizabeth first stitched it. Measures 6 1/2" x 9 3/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
