Original Description:
Small late 19th century sampler by Hannah Frost. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c.1880 or slightly later. Plus, I am also selling three other samplers by the Frost family, one of which was completed by Hannah in 1885 when she was 12 years old. That sampler is more detailed than this undated one which makes me think Hannah was slightly younger when she finished it. Worked in wool on a hessian, this little sampler is completely charming with n...eat stitch work throughout. The upper and middle sections of the hessian are stitched with three rows of alphabet letters with a small diamond motif to each side of the last row. The lower section of the hessian is stitched with Hannah's name separated by a diamond motif with a central-ish basket beneath with a tree and dog to its left and a bird and dog to its right.The hessian has overall discolouration consistent with its age and the colours of the wool are good. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Hannah first stitched it. As can also be seen from the photographs, all edges of the hessian gauze apart from the selvedge are frayed.Measures 13" x 9 1/2" to the outer edges of the fraying.
