V Rare Early George II Repoussé Sterling Silver Beer Tankard London 1729 212gThis is a rare piece of early George II silver in the form of a beer tankard that looks as if it will hold a half-pint. It is hallmarked with stamps for London 1729 and maker’s initials of “GB” under the symbol of a bird (bird blurred but present for George Boothby; registered at the London guild in August 1720. The hallmarks are crisp and easily read.It is well hand-decorated with a repoussé pattern ...roses and other flowers. The mug has a low foot with a gadroon like pattern. It has a “D” arced handle with a solid thumb rest, hand-hammered with a leaf pattern.It has an extravagant escutcheon naming area framed by ornate rising surf scrolls with feathery engraved initials that look to read “GHB”. With these initials you could speculate that it was the personal piece of the silversmith, George Boothby It is in excellent antique condition; with no faults or damage to report; some light wear and ever-so-slightly misshapen top rim.
