These were fun to photograph.
I had to go through several references in Art Movements and styles in history to try and make sense of the very unusual nature of this sconce design. Elements of influence on lightness and elegance from Rococo to shield and armor infer...ences from Arts & Craft, Mission and Spanish legacies can be seen in the intricate patterns and structure of the sconce frames. Unlike most of the vintage sconces I've listed, that are heavy and cast metal - averaging 2 lbs a piece, these are relatively thin and light-weight at 1 lb each. With masterfully folded edges, they are designed to appear solid and robust less high expenditure of common resources to create them. Economy with quality, I learned, was a distinctively American injection into the British Aesthetic Style, using production techniques to start components and then fine craftsmen to finish and assemble the end products. The American manufacturer and designer, Gustav Stickley, was a vocal proponent of this approach. His creations and even faithful reproductions are still highly sought after.
Each sconce measures 8 1/2 inches tall, 4 1/2 wide and 6 deep. From visual examination and use of a magnet, they appear to be made of strong sheet metal brass. As stated, the beautifully folded edges give the illusion of thick cast metal. They resist twisting in my hands and will easily support moderate weight, if needed and applied.
There is some surface blemish consistent with age but the finish has held up remarkably well over the years. One drip candle sleeve is missing but those are easy to replace. If you're looking for a pair of period sconces with wide crossover appeal, this set may be your perfect candidate. If you require more, the two remaining siblings will be offered in a separate listing. These sconces can be restored with decorative bulbs or partnered with clip-on shades over standard light bulbs. For an alternate experience, they can be updated to receive trans-formative hand-blown glass shades that change colors and patterns on a dimmer. Examples are among my other listings.
I have given them a cursory cleaning and leave the rest to the buyer's discretion. Electric parts should be tested for safety prior to use.
I acquired this set with a handsome hoard of lamps and period parts from established antiquities dealers over the years for my lighting business. I am selling excess inventory to lessen my storage. This pair is an excellent example of a bygone era that will be a pleasure to restore and welcome into your home.
