Description: This is a Sigaraki-ware(*) vase made for Sado (= tea ceremony) and Ikebana (= Japanese style flower ). * Shigaraki-ware is a stoneware, which is made of a special clay (only available in Shigaraki area) and baked at very high temperature (1, 200 ~ 1, 300 degrees Celsius). It does not&nb...sp;use glaze at all. Thus, it looks very natural and primitive. Stoneware is still produced in Japan, because it is loved by the people who practice tea ceremony and Ikebana.
It was made by a famous potter SUGIMOTO Zuiho (杉本 瑞峯) in Sigaraki. He won many prizes at national level exhibitions in Japan such as the Japan Traditional Art Exhibition. He signed his given name Zuiho (瑞峯) in cursive script at the left hand side of the wooden box.
At the right hand side, he did draw 信楽 唐立 花入 which mean.信楽 = Shigaraki = Shigaraki-ware唐立 = からたち in Hiragana = Karatachi = Trifoliate Orange花入 = Hanaire = Vase
"唐立 = からたち = Karatachi " is the motif or the theme of this vase. I believe he took the idea (of this vase) from one of the "Important National Treasure" in Japan. Please look into the following URL. You can find "からたち " under the photo. https://www.ebara.co.jp/csr/hatakeyama/colle026.htmlIt was made in Momoyama period (1573 ~ 1600) in Iga area, which is a next village from Shigaraki. Tea ceremony and Ikebana became popular in Japan during this period.
The flower arrangements shown are just examples (photo #3 & 5). You can do better. :-) :-)
It is in excellent condition. It seems not used (or used only a couple of times). The box is original and signed by the artist (photo #12).
