We are selling another pipe tamp this week so please take a look as we will always combine the postage.This is for a nice antique brass pipe tamp from the early 1800s fashioned with the bust of Shakespeare on top. This tamp is featured on page 274 of the tobacco stoppers book. These little tools were usually made for the sole purpose of compressing the tobacco down into the pipe before smoking. They were very primarily gentlemans pieces and therefore often reflected the political ...atmosphere, clubs, gentlemanly pastimes of the day and of course what was amusing at the time. It is in excellent condition with a nice rich unpolished patina to it, there is no damage anywhere and it stands 60mm (2.5") tall.
