VERY UNUSUAL AND RARE OLD ANTIQUE AFRICAN SWORD WITH HUGE ABSTRACT HANDLE

Being offered is a very rare and unusual old antique African sword. I haven't ever seen another one like it. It measures 32" when measured in its scabbard. The handle is a very large abstract almost anthropomorphic style hilt done in thick metal. Unsure if it is bronze, steel, iron or what. It is thick and obviously is meant to make an impression. Most likely some type of prestige or ceremonial sword. The metal of the handle has a nice dark pat...ina. The blade is welded to the handle. The blade is triangular shaped and flat with a slight bevel to the edges. The edges of the blade are sharp. The blade is covered in dark oxidation patches and some light red rust in some places. Would clean up very nicely. The shape of the blade and the scabbard seem to be pointing to a North African origin. The blade is similar to Takouba blades from that region but obviously the handle is unlike anything I have seen before. The scabbard is present but in rough condition. It features a wood core that has been wrapped in a green cloth like material and then leather placed on the top. The leather is missing in a number of spots and approximately 50-60% of the leather is remaining but with some looseness to some of the remaining leather. All in all, it is a very unusual and rare African sword that could benefit from some additional research to understand the purpose of it and the meaning of the handle.
