Early 19th century linen and wool work school sampler by Jane Nicholson aged 13 - 1838. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns finishing with two rows of sets of family initials. The middle section of the linen is stitched with Jane's details plus those of her school - Elizabeth Barrons School, Huntsworth - which have the initials IC and HC to their right... and the date of 1838 beneath. This section of stitching has a meandering border pattern above and below and a tall floral motif to each side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral motif which has a lion and floral motif to its left and right. There is a diamond to each side of the side blooms of the floral motif, whilst the linen to either side of its topmost blooms is stitched with a roundel motif. butterfly, heart and tree. The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with a small area of damage to the upper left side edge. The colours of the thread are good with several areas of stitch loss. The last photo is of the reverse of the sampler and indicates how the colours would have looked when Jane first stitched it. This photograph also shows remnants of old paper around the edges of the linen from where the sampler has been glued down at some point of time.Measures 10 1/2" x 12 3/4" ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE ASK.
