FLEMISH SCHOOL 17thC - RELIGIOUS SCENE - STUDIO VAN DIEPENBEECK - INK DRAWING
Item History & Price
The drawing, executed in pen, ink and grey wash on laid paper, depicts a religious scene, showing the Madonna and Child on a cloud. A young woman looks up to the Madonna with a begging look, hoping she will realise miracle and save the young man she holds in her arms. A putto pulls up a curtain to show the Holy Virgin in full glory. This drawing, without any doubt, was a preparatory study for a larger scale altar piece, ...in our opinion a commission from a provincial church in Flanders.
Authorship : the drawing is from the Flemish School, given to the studio of Abraham van Diepenbeeck. The style of our drawing shows a typical studio work, executed for local church communities and being worked out by the studio of a leading artist.
ABRAHAM VAN DIEPENBEECK ('s Hertogenbosch 1596 - Antwerp 1675) : Flemish painter, draughtsman. He was the son of a glass painter and initially was trained in his father's trade. He was admitted to the Antwerp Guild of St Luke in 1622 as a glass-painter. At first his activities seem to have consisted of designing and painting stained-glass windows for various churches and monasteries in Antwerp.
Monumental painting only seems to have been a minor part of Van Diepenbeeck's activities. Of much greater importance was his role in the production of drawings and oil sketches intended as designs, not only for stained glass windows but also for prints. Only after 1630 Diepenbeeck also began to paint and draw, and he 1638 he enrolled as a master painter. His paintings display the strong stylistic and compositional influence of Peter Paul Rubens (see also our drawing), the leading painter in Antwerp at the time. He painted religious and mythological subjects.
Diepenbeeck is mostly known for his drawings and engravings. Most of his designs for prints were commissioned by the Antwerp publishers Van Meurs and Moretus, but he also printed individual engravings on his own account. He also made designs for tapestries.
