In what became known asthe ambush at Wairau, Sergeant Samuel Hill was among a group of nine soldiersof the 57th escorting a prisoner of the regiment when the detachment wasambushed and fired upon from the range of a few yards. These were to be thefirst shots of the second Taranaki campaign on 4th May 1863. (from The NewZealand Wars and the Pioneering Period). Only one man escaped alive from theparty. Sergeants Hill’s woundsare described in a contemporary publication in graphic details as follows‘Gun-shot wound though right side of abdomen, both arms smashed by bullets, ball through head, integuments of right side of same all burnt by powder . . .head tomahawked and speared through as well.’ A memorial to the men waserected at St Mary’s Church, New Plymouth. Due to this incident, after twoyears cessation, hostilities recommenced in the Taranaki. James Hill is confirmed as wounded slightly atSebastopol and after two years in Malta was entitled to rank of ColourSergeant. After the tragic death of his brother, he took discharge in NewZealand after 21 years service, with glowing testimonials and was buried in1897 with full military honours.
