This is a rare, awesome find of a vintage/antique marked "Occupied Japan" wood wall clock of a BEAR with moving eyes. More commonly this was an owl clock, so an Occupied Japan BEAR clock with moving eyes is rare, especially in this superb vintage condition!
What is also amazing with this Bear clock is that it also "bears" a decided face of "GIZMO" of recent movie fame--in fact, when my young grandkids saw this clock, that was the name they used for this look-a-like! The ...eyes & facial expression is as endearing & captivating as the movie Gizmo's is.
The eyes move back & forth as the clock is ticking & the pendulum moves beneath, & the clock is driven by the weight shown in the photos on the chain, & to rewind the clock you would pull the chain back to start it all again.
I have owned this cute guy for 25 years, & he has been very carefully stored for all that time. If you look at all the photos, you will see that the marked clock mechanism is clean, precise, & shines brilliantly, and all the original parts are still there, including the printed instructions on its back, in both English & Japanese characters--see Photo #10. Also, if you turn over that sliding back panel holding the printed paper, on the other side of that panel has a printed mark T.S. & a round orb drawing with Japanese letters inside the circle--these are both near the bottom of that smooth wood panel--see Photo #11.
At present, this exceptional "Gizmo" Bear is not running because he is in need of lubrication of the clockwork mechanism. Since I am not a clockmaker, I do not oil/lubricate the clock mechanism myself--nor would I try--That is for the lucky new owner of this awesome mechanical treasure to do. (This clock was purchased long ago as was the German carved wood owl-on-book clock with rotating eyes telling the time that I sold a few months ago; that clock also needed only lubrication by the new owner--and it was reported to me from Europe that that one was successful & working as well!)
