Lovely classical terra cotta vase or jar, probably English, late 1900s. This is similar to Prattware of the period, but that pottery was decorated with colorful transfers, while this has painted enamel decoration. I have the sense that this may be an attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Royal Doulton's Lambethware and Wedgwood's Rosso Antico. The piece has a form reminiscent of a greek stamnos, the graceful flaring curves of the body transitioning into a flat shoulder with ...a wide mouth. The classical influence on the piece is also evident in the raised decoration, the fluted sides feeling like a neoclassical translation of Roman columns. The shoulder is ringed with a guilloche pattern that seems drawn directly from Roman mosaic borders. The round center of the twists in the guilloche are raised and enameled white, giving the appearance of tiny pearls. The painted green, black, and white accents painted onto some of the raised elements contrast vividly with the deep red-brown of the un-glazed clay.
The vase is unmarked. It measures approximately 4" tall and 3 1/2" in diameter. It is in very good condition. The only damage I can find is a chip in one of the "pearls". There is overall light wear and minor wear to the paint. I see a few small areas that have a faint lightening in the clay, possibly slight mineral deposits. There is one spot on the shoulder that has a white spatter of some sort. This is small and very hard to see without magnification.
