Original Description:
Early 19th century linen and green wool work sampler by Eliza Nye - 1807. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns, whilst the middle section contains the following verse
For every trifle scorn to take offenceThat always shews great pride and little senseGood nature and good sense should ever joinTo err is human, to forgive divine
The lower section of... the linen is stitched with a row of alphabet letters with a central plaque beneath containing Eliza's name and the date of October 28th 1807. There is a tree on either side of the plaque and an undulating pattern beneath. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some small, barely noticeable areas of damage. There is also some faint staining and damage along the bottom edge and what appears to be a sliver of wood on the bottom edge beneath the left side tree. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colour of the thread appears good though it is likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some very slight bleeding to areas of the stitch work and a few small areas of stitch loss to the framework of the plaque. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. Both are in good condition with a small amount of veneer loss on the inside edge of the upper left corner and a much smaller area on the lower left inside edge of the frame and some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with their age. I also want to point out that the stitch work down the left side of the sampler is partially obscured by the slip, possibly due to it slightly misaligned when it was framed.Measures 11 1/2" x 12 3/4" (sight size) and 15 1/4" x 16 1/2" including the frame.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
