Uslan Challenger 8' Five-Sided Bamboo Fly Rod
Here is a quality Uslan 8' three piece two tip five-sided bamboo fly rod, made by Nat Uslan of Spring Valley, New York, U.S.A. Uslan's rods were based on the earlier theories of rod builder and mathematician Robert Crompton, who concluded that pentagonal shaped rods should be inherently stronger than traditional six-sided bamboo rods since there would be no continuous glue line and the stress from flexing would be transferred more ...directly to the bamboo itself. Each section of this rod is marked with serial number 101951; therefore, this is the 19th rod built in October of 1951.
The rod, with it's uniform honey blonde color, appears to have been resin impregnated. It has been given an overcoat of slightly sticky varnish. I gently cleaned some bag fuzz from the rod with 0000 steel wool. All sections are full length, original, and straight. Cork grip is lightly soiled and smooth. Wraps are tight and original. The Super Z style ferrules (not marked except for alignment dots) fit snugly and disjoint with a pop. There is no clicking when the rod is flexed. Marked as weighing 4 ounces, although rod actually weighs 4.5 ounces on my digital scale (maybe marked weight is the blank without the hardware?). Fast dry fly action, probably a 5 or 6 weight. Uslan rods are known for their power and durability. Comes with maroon bag that is a little long but looks like other Uslan bags that I've seen. The extra length is handy to make a folded over hood inside the tube. Also comes with a nice aluminum Peerless tube that I have also seen with other Uslan rods. Someone has added a hanger to the cap. Will ship well padded in a sturdy shipping tube. A fine rod to fish or collect!
