Here's what has been done:
1. All Electrolytic Power Supply Caps have been carefully removed, machined open, and new high quality discrete electrolytic caps installed into the exiting cases. Not easy, but certainly more aesthetic than holes in a chassis, or clumsy placement underneath. Note metal tape seal at bottom of each metal CAP. Also an ABS housing... was designed and 3-D printed to replace the original Cardboard CAP housing so as to look and perform like new.
2. Most smaller capacitors have been replaced with high quality Orange Drop 715P Film caps, and very small pF Cap values replaced with high quality mica caps. See images for details.
3. (4) Brand New Tung-Sol Matched Quad 7591A Output Tubes. Less than 8 hours operational use.
4. (4) Brand New Tung-Sol Matched Quad 12AX7A / ECC83A Preamp Tubes. Less than 8 hours operational use.
5. Incandescent Channel Indicator Lamps replaced with LED circuit and 3-D printed housing for VERY long life. I doubt you'll ever replace again.
6. Note: There are over $500 in new tubes and components purchased to restore this unit.
7. There are also (2) ORIGINAL Telefunkin 12AX7A / ECC83A Output Driver tubes that still perform wonderfully. I also include (2) working Amperex 12AX7A's from the mid 70's, and another ORIGINAL Telefunkin tube if you wish to play around.
8. The original Sherwood Owners Manual from 1962 is included. I will also include SAM's Photofact on CD, and all modified and marked up schematics. Photos too if you want them.
9. The Outer Cover was modified in the 70's to incorporate a cooling fan (Sorry, wasn't thinking back then). That's all been removed, but the cover has a large square hole. Not sure why you would want to cover this unit since the inside is beautiful to look at, and the cover does nothing to improve performance. It will ship with cover on for protection.
10. Face and Controls are in very good condition for the equipment age. There are faint scratches on gold plating of face bezel. Some tarnish on knobs. Minimal or no scratching noise on Tone, Level, Balance and Volume Controls. Copper chassis has been basically cleaned, but no chemical wash or polishing. For a unit that is almost 60 years old, it looks and sounds great.
I've tested the following inputs using a sine wave generator (and of course a turntable on Phono input). Phono & Tape Inputs work with very low input signal levels (ex. 10mV).Tape Mon input requires a higher level (2V) input signal, which is the level you get from a modern CD player, etc... . The output sound is classic tube warmth. Output levels easily match the original spec. I measured in excess of 60 Watts per channel when overdriving the Tape Mon input using a 3V sine wave into a resistive 8 Ohm load. No visible distortion on oscilloscope..
As this is a 60 year old piece of equipment (almost), I cannot offer any extended operational guarantees. I will put EXTREME care into shipping it as well, and wish to communicate with the buyer before shipment to discuss options, such as removing tubes, etc...
Note: As a general observation while restoring old audio. All audio inputs are usually shorted internally when not in use, but as with all older tube amps, I still recommend using inexpensive shorting type RCA plugs on any unused inputs to alleviate open circuit noise when switching between other used inputs at the other end of the dial. This is not due to equipment age.
This unit has been in my family since it was originally purchased in 1962. I used it in college in the 70's, then it sat unused for 40+ years. Please ask me questions. I'm an Electrical Engineer, and have carefully analyzed and restored this unit over the past several months. I have many more detail photos of the restoration and componentry if you have specific questions.
