1922 Atwater Kent Model 2 Breadboard Radio Factory - Built With No Mods
Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:51250581 | Type: Model 2 Breadboard |
Brand: Atwater Kent |
Here's a complete, correct and wholly original 1922 Atwater Kent Model 2 breadboard radio. Unlike virtually every other surviving example of this scarce radio, the one you're bidding on this week is pristine -- just as it was shipped from the factory, with no added Variometer and no extra drill-outs in the board to accommodate a 3rd component (see the original 1922 Atwater Kent advertisement for the Model 1 and Model 2 pictured below).
The radio has been tested, and it still works with both a loudspeaker and headphones. In fact, for an unmodified Model 2 it works reasonably well, as you can see in the video posted below, which was taken this past Friday morning, when it was pouring rain outside -- the worst weather for radio reception. Decent volume, with more sensitivity and selectivity than you'd expect for an early battery radio without any regeneration.
Condition is excellent. The early orange/red mahogany board retains its original finish and exhibits normal crazing consistent with age and authenticity. All of the chocolate brown bakelite is clean and undamaged, with no chips, no cracks, no issues. The engraved numbers and hash marks on all the dials are crisp and clear, and there are no damaged or missing backing plates. The wire on the tuners is still tightly wound, and there are no stains anywhere. The paint on the TA island is original and in excellent condition. The wiring on the underside of the board is pristine, as are the staples. All four feet are original.
Comes as pictured, with 3 good tipped 1 amp tubes and a working pair of Baldwin headphones. If you'd like to operate the radio, you'll need a good regulated DC power supply (such as an ARBEIII), a good indoor ground connection, and a longwire outdoor antenna (at least 120 feet long, and 20 feet above the ground). It will also help to have had some experience tuning/operating a similarly configured 1920's battery radio, preferably an early breadboard.
If you collect early Atwater Kent breadboards (and even if you don't) you might want to bookmark this listing. The chances that you'll ever have another opportunity to bid on or buy a working, factory built, unmodified Model 2 are next to none.
When you've finished checking out my ebay listings this week, take a look at my TechnoGallerie website, where you can buy hard-to-find antique phonographs, antique radios, antique cameras and other gadgets you're not likely to see anywhere else. New arrivals include an early, uncommon metal grill Victrola VV-IV with an Exhibition Jr. reproducer. Just type TechnoGallerie in the address line of your web browser and hit the enter key. TechnoGallerie has a newsletter, too, and if you take a second to sign up for it, you'll receive an email update whenever I list something new on the site -- typically once a week.
That's about it. I will pack everything carefully and properly, and I can assure you that it will show up at your doorstep in the same fine condition in which its leaves mine. I have been shipping antique phonographs and radios for years, and if you check my feedback, you'll see that I know how to do it correctly.
