Item History & Price
Reference Number: Avaluer:51625 |
Remember the good old days (whenever THEY were!)? you'd drive up to or check into a road-side motel and check in. If you wanted to wake up in the morning at a certain time, you put a dime into one of these and it ring at the time you pre-set on the dial.
The clock worked and was would daily by the room keeper with a clock key, but if you wanted to use the alarm feature, you needed to pay for it. These were from the days before the m...ain desk had a system that would ring your room phone with a pre-recorded call. The innkeeper didn't want to set his own alarm to get up and wake up a guest at 3AM by knocking on their door, so these were invented.
Great device, AND a profit turner.
This is a great intact piece that runs on a clock-work mechanism. The alarm can be set by using the knobs and dials by the guest. Nice, clean and comes with the original key and lock. Completely unmolested and doesn't have paint all over the sides. (If a room was re-painted, the painters wouldn't bother to take these off the wall and just painted around them. And usually some of these have a couplle colors on them.
The plastic holder on the front fits a business card. They Motel would either put their r own card in in the frame, OR they would rent that space to a local restaurant to put their cards into the frames to lure travelers to a local hash-house.
Great piece of Americana Road-House history.
The alarm rings very well. The clock mechanism works, but sporadically stops and starts. It should get a good cleaning and oiling by a competent clocksmith. This comes with the original key to open the unit, and I'll include a winding key as well. This has seen VERY LITTLE use and is almost new old stock based on a visual inspection.
