This wall-size (33-1/4" x 27-1/4 in original 1950s vintage frame; 28" x 22" canvas alone) oil painting was awarded at the May 1960 state convention of the California Federation of Women's Clubs to the North Fork (California) post. The federation has been a major supporter of the arts, particularly of women artists in California. The federation assessed and monitored the arts and advocated for their due, and the club received the award for compiling an outstanding report concerning the ...state of the arts in their community. Marjorie Reed, who was residing in northern California at the time, was known to refuse to sell paintings to some buyers, and to select particular paintings for others. She obviously favored this organization, since this Butterfield Stage painting is a superb example, replete with vivid, vibrant and harmonious pigment juxtapositions applied in spontaneous, animated brushstrokes, including judicious impasto application. The canvas is in extremely good condition, with a small blemish in the blue of the sky in the painting's upper right portion (pictured), and which appears to me to have been a phenomena of painting execution, since I don't discern peripheral signs of trauma. Images also show the original frame in very good condition, with a few isolated areas of wear to a what appears to be a clear, matte varnish. This painting was well cared for by women of taste, conviction and cultural sensibilities. In the early years subsequent to its presentation to the women of North Fork, it was lovingly circulated to spend some time warming each of the homes of core club members. In my research, I discovered that one of the families had a young son whose letter from a Vietnam front had been published in the local newspaper. This painting has absorbed a lot of care, love and life and has undoubtedly imparted much comfort. It has a good deal more to offer.
