This type of whimsical animal padded winter bonnet has been popular in northern China.
The image of benevolent animals is regarded as the protector of children to frighten malicious spirits. The embroidered blooming flowers on the ears and the rim of the hat are symbols of wealth and honor. This animal has dense eye lashes and bugle eyes with reflective foil. The use of reflective metal or mirrors originates from the Taoist beli...ef that a reflection can reveal evil spirits in disguise. This would ward off evil spirits and send out a message that the child could see these and thereby be protected.
It is in good antique condition with a bit of wear to the silk of the nose.
