This listing is for a vintage Berg Larsen tenor saxophone mouthpiece. It is stamped 95 1 M, with the M offset to the right. I will mention right off the bat that this piece has been worked on. It has been refaced, and I believe that the chamber (as in the 'bullet drop off' area) might have been e...nlarged slightly. The work looks to be very well done, a suction test produces a good seal, and it plays great. Ironically, the current tip opening is .095" on the dot. Anyone who knows vintage Bergs knows that they regularly came from the factory about .005" smaller than the number on the mouthpiece would suggest (although nobody seems to know why). So this one was probably opened up by only about .005" or less. This is normally about the max that refacers like to go on a stainless steel mouthpiece anyway. There does appear to be thinning of the rails by re-tapering the exterior of the body, which is a technique consistent with a quality re-face job. This piece is in very good condition. The tip, table, and rails are perfectly smooth, and it does not appear to have ever been dropped or dented. The bite plate is free of tooth indentations. The ligature and cap are also in excellent condition. It comes in its original red box, but the box is pretty well trashed. I am just including it as a possible means of dating the mouthpiece. I believe that the red boxes were used in the 1960's and maybe into the 70's. I've priced it low due to the fact that it isn't factory original, although in all honesty I think it is at least as good, if not better than most original Bergs I've tried!
