Mid Century Acquisition
African Woven Basket & Lid
Poss. Belgian Congo Region, Africa
This finely woven basket with lid is in beautiful shape. It's provena...nce was not recorded. Brought home from Africa by Presbyterian Missionaries whose ministry lasted from the mid 1950s into the early 1960s.
This and other African figures and masks we are listing came from the estate of a Presbyterian missionary family from Tennessee. They obtained proper visas and etc from the American Embassy in Brussels, Belgium to do Missionary work in the Belgian Congo in the early 1950s. Among their papers I have found references about where they were situated. In 1955 they were at Luebo, Congo. I also found a number of later references to the town/city of Leopoldville. Because many of these African figures, masks and objects are unidentified, I've added this little bit of back story I found as it is difficult for us to know exactly where some objects are from.
I found this note referring to local tribes when the Missionary family was at Luebo:
"Lulua tribe was the basic Luebo tribe but Baluba had come in from the east by the time we got there. Then to our north and east were the Bakete, a kind of subservient to the Bakuba from up Meshenge and Bulape way. To the southwest were the Bashilele but we never thought of them as neighbors when we were living at Luebo. When traveling to other stations there were the BasalaMpasu down Moma way. And, of course, the Baluba were dominant in the eastern part of our Mission territory. And Marc Poole used to fly up to visit and minister to a Pygmy tribe north of Bulape but I had no contact with them. Mom went with him one time".
Basket Measures 5" tall x 7.375" diameter.
