Rare Antique 1920's Jennings Brothers Panther Bronze Bookends JB 1619
This auction is for a rare and beautiful pair of bookends by Jennings Brothers. Each has the JB initials plus stock number 1619 on the backs of the bases. They also have the signature of the artist, C. (Carl) Vieth who designed a number of pieces for Jennings Brothers. They were given Jennings' most gorgeous chocolate bronze finish over their hollow-cast grey metal (spelter)... bodies. Circa 1925. Each one measures 6" Tall, 7" Long and 4" Wide and together they weight just shy of 5 lbs.
Condition is very good. No damage to the metal, no cracks, holes or dents. Finish is almost pristine but one piece does show a few small areas where it was scraped (worst is on the back; see 2nd last photo). Both pieces still have their original tin bottom plates. And both pieces sit flat and stable.Carl Vieth (1870-1922). was born in Denmark. He immigrated to the United States in 1907 and worked as a silver designer and sculptor. C. Vieth was one of the only sculptors who signed their bookends for Jennings Brothers. About Jennings Brothers: The Jennings Brothers began their metalwork foundry in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1891 and remained open until 1953. They produced some of the most finely crafted art metal pieces that exist to this day. Their product line ranged from bookends to candlesticks to animal figurines, etc. Their methods of production required meticulous techniques which did not lend themselves to machine-directed mass production, but rather depended upon the handiwork of expert artists, sculptors and metal craftsman. Jennings Brothers metalwork is highly prized and their distinctive "JB" mark, which marked all of their products, is highly sought after by collectors world-wide. Jennings employed many new immigrants to the U.S. and their designs had an international flair. All Jennings Brothers pieces were made of cast white metal or spelter, although they are often mistaken for bronze or even silver because of their high quality crafting and fine rich patination. There is no other major metalwork foundry from this era with finishes as durable as Jennings Bros and the complexity of their designs is highly prized.Shipping is to be paid by the buyer. International buyers will pay shipping plus an additional $5 handling fee.
