This is a unique Japanese hibachi brazier from the mid Meiji Era (c. 1875). It is made of a thick bronze with hand hammered images of deer grazing in a field. This braizier was used over 140 years ago in Japan as a space heater. It was used then as a space heater and would have been half filled with charcoal sitting at the center of the ash. In picture 8, you can see the line where the ash came up to. The bottom of this hibachi has a graceful footed o...utward arch (see last picture).There are side handles in the form of foo dog heads which were used to transfer the hibachi while warm. The foo dog is traditionally known in China as an imperial guardian lion. It is said to be half lion and half dog with the spunk of both. They were a mythological animal that protected the spirits of ancestors past. Statues of foo dogs have traditionally stood in front of Chinese Imperial palaces and temples from the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. - 220 A.D.), and were believed to have powerful mythic protective benefits. The brazier measures 10" outer diameter (not including handles) by 10" tall (25 x 25 cm). Having been used lovingly and sparingly, and probably put into storage for most of a century, this bronze brazier remains in fine condition with a nice deep aged patina.
