For its age, this plane is in great condition. The original japanning is about 80% intact, but makes for wonderful patina. The rosewood on this plane is remarkable. There are no cracks or repairs on the tote and the knob has only the finest of hairline cracks that do not go through. The grain pattern on the note and the knob... is lovely. There are small nicks and scratches here and there, but there are no cracks or pitting in the cast iron. This plane would look great on a shelf as the largest plane in a collection. But this is still a functional plane that could be a great user if you appreciate history, tradition, and the idea of using the same tool as a craftsman who could have fought in the civil war.
The only items that I believe to be replacements are the iron and cap iron. The iron sports the 1892 patent date and was most likely replaced at the end of the 19th century (maybe after the first owner used up the original blade and retired?).
All in all, this is a magnificent specimen and a piece of history. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you would like additional photos.
