From my Medical Collection: Here we have an Antique Unmarked EBONY Medical Surgical Trephine Trepanning Craniotomy Skull Drill. There is no maker's name on this instrument. (Trepanning is the medicalprocess of drilling or cutting a hole into the skull in order to relievepressure on the brain tissue, lift a compression fracture of the skull, orremove a blood clot on the brain. If aperson had a concussion with depression of the skull bone, that depressed areaw...ould need to be lifted or removed and then the clot under the concussionremoved to alleviate trauma induced symptoms.) This hand operated T-Handle Drill has an EBONY handle, nickel-plated shaft, and a round surgical steel saw blade. The shaft also has a sliding steel internal spike thatcan be moved into position to act as a centering point when turning thecircular cutting blade. This instrument is from the pre-sterilization period (late-1800's) as evident by the use of natural materials (Ebony) and the lack of totally smooth surfaces in the design of the instrument. The drill is in very good condition with good nickelcoverage and no damage to the blade. The Ebony handle has a very nice turned shape and 4 'checkered' panels to increase the gripping ability. The drill is approx. 4-3/4"" tall with a 4" handle. The handle is removable. The round blade will cut a 7/8" diameter hole. An excellent example to add to a medical collection
