Hello, up for auction is a rare antique 1800's French MATHIEU medical surgical Trephine skull drill or trepanning brace.Louis Mathieu of Paris France was a surgical instrument maker in the late 1800s. The brace is marked: 'MATHIEU' This type of instrument was used in operations of the skull (Craniotomy) to reduce fractures and also to relieve inter-cranial pressure due to hemorrhage.
