I am in the process of divesting a beautiful and eclectic collection of desirable ethnic and costume dolls on the eBay marketplace! Quite a few of these dolls are rarely available for sale. These dolls came from the estate of a well traveled collector with examples that span the globe. They were lovingly displayed and so the condition is usually very good. The time spent researching these dolls was both interesting and invaluable in broadening my own scope of knowledge. After all, isn...t it the history in addition to the workmanship and beauty of these dolls that makes them so enjoyable to collect? In the spotlight for your bidding consideration is this very special 1950’s/60’s Eegee Miss Babette doll in vintage original commemorative “Miss Space Needle” presentation! This beauty, in near mint condition, is Eegee’s answer to the Mattel Barbie. Like Barbie, she is actually a Bild Lilli clone, who was often referred to as the first Barbie. Standing 11 1/2” tall, she is made with a hard plastic body and limbs, and a vinyl head with rooted hair. She has the dramatic face painting of the Bild Lilli doll, which is all perfect and unblemished. Though her arms are a slightly lighter material (original), her coloration is peaches and cream, and without fault! Her sleek, side-swept bangs titian ponytail looks all original. It is held in with a rubber band, and I don’t know if that is a factory tie. The hair appears to be in the original set and is nearly perfect. Also original are her faux pearl dangle earrings. She is incised on the back of the head with E 56 G, with the number being just below and in between the letters, as photographed. She is very clean, as are her clothes. She comes wearing this “Miss Space Needle” outfit, which is a replica of one of the uniforms worn by the Seattle Space Needle employees. I know there is a gold lamé outfit that mimicked the uniforms worn by waitresses in the Space Needle restaurant for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair in Washington state. I’m guessing this doll was factory dressed to commemorate the same event. She wears a slim pencil skirt with matching double breasted vest over her short sleeved white blouse. The vest fastens with velcro, first widely used in the 1950’s, The blouse closes with buttons and button holes, and the skirt fastens with a single snap. Tiny straight pins fasten the red “Miss Space Needle” sash to the outfit. White peep toe heels finish off her outfit. The doll comes in her original acetate tube (no lid, one small crack near the bottom). On the bottom of the tube, and inside the neck of her blouse are found the same tag: “M & M Doll Costumes, Seattle 88, Wash.” This is a beautiful example of a Bild Lilli clone, wearing an outfit that represents a little piece of World’s Fair History, and the iconic mid-century modern Seattle Space Needle!
