This is a used sample of antique barbed wire fencing. This sample features two different patented barbs. First is a Hiram B. Scutt patent, dated June 18, 1878; and second is a John Stubbe patent dated October 23, 1883. This wire is called "Stubbes Large Plate and Scutt's Sheet Metal Arrow Plate Combination Barbs", by collectors. (ref Hagemeier 39-F VARIATION). (39-F shows the Large and Small Stubbe plates in combination. I could not find a listing for the Stubbe & Scutt barbs togeth...er). This wire features two twisted together round line wires Stubbe Barbs are from a sheet metal plate. Plate is notched in at each corner and each set of corners bent towards each other. Scutt barbs are made from an arrowhead shaped piece of sheet metal. Point of arrow is split, plate is insterted between line wires, and points of plate bent in opposing directions. This sample is 18" in length and has two Stubbe Plates and one Scutt Plate. Barbs are fairly well spaced, and cut is well centered. Wire shows age wear, with light pitting. There are no bent, broken or repaired barbs. Wire is in good used condition.
