DESCRIPTION'The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne' is a the best-known text of the pioneering English naturalist and ornithologist, Gilbert White. First published in 1789 by his brother Benjamin, the text has been continuously in print, and is often cited as the fourth most published work in the English language.The book is compiled from a mixture of letters sent between White and other naturalists such as Thomas Pennant and Daines Barrington. The tet also contains a 'Naturalist's Calendar' comparing phenology observations made by White and William Markwick of the first appearances in the year of different animals and plants; and observations of natural history organized more or less systematically by species and group. The second volume, which is reprinted less often, details the antiquities of Selborne.Illustrated throughout by J. G. Keulemans, Herbert Railton, and Edmund J. Sullivan.Collated, complete with numerous 'smaller' in text illustrations and thirty nine plates to volume I, including a coloured frontispiece and a folding facsimile of a 'Letter to Thomas Pennant, Esq', and forty nine plates to volume I with a folding facsimile of a 'Letter to the Hon. Daines Barrington'.Complete in two volumes.
CONDITIONIn the uniform publisher's original cloth binding. Slightly bumped to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight fading and marking to cloth. Hinges strained. Front hinge split and strained between front endpapers, volume I. Booksellers label tipped to front pastedowns. Offsetting to front and rear free endpaper. Prior owner's ink inscription to front free-endpaper, dated '75. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout, with scattered spotting to first and last few pages. Prior owner's ink inscription to half title page, dated '1902'. Very small tidemark to fore edge of title page, volume I.
