1909. George G Harrap & Co printed by Vincent Brooks Day & Son. Limited edition of 525 of which this is number 403. Signed by the artist Willy Pogany.A handsome copy of this 110-year old version of the Rubaiyat. It has a specially-created dark green crushed morocco gilt binding, possibly by Sangorski & Sutcliffe, made for Bumpus of Oxford. The spine has 5 raised bands with ornate compartments featuring the iconographic crescent and star. The front cover's inner panel h...as gilt stems, leaves and grapes with occasional red roses in between. The spine has lost a millimetre of leather at the top and at the bottom there is the beginning of a tear on the front hinge - and the corners are bumped - see photos.Inside, the decorated cream end papers have a light crayon mark on the right of the front pair and on the left of the back pair (zoom into photographs provided, very faint) and the very edge is lightly sunned. The decorations on the unnumbered pages are numerous and ornate and in all colours. There is occasional spotting and toning and four tops of pages have had their corners creased at some point.Otherwise, very smart condition of this rare and lavishly illustrated Pogany book.
