Being offered is an interesting old antique archaic probably excavated pedang or parang type of sword most probably from Indonesia or Sumatra and possibly even Southeast Asia. The beautiful handle and blade fragment measures 21 3/4” long. The handle is bronze with a great very old patina. You can make out the designs on the handle which seem to show a Naga meandering around foliage. The Naga theme continues on the ferrule or lower handle portion. Bronze ...handles of this color tend to date on the early side. I think this is most probably a 16th century or earlier bronze handle and blade fragment. The style of handle reminds me of Aceh swords and other similar from that region of Sumatra. But I wouldn’t rule out other areas in the Indonesian archipelago. I also wouldn’t rule out Southeast Asia. A lot of very early bronze handled swords have been excavated in Vietnam and Cambodia and the decorative themes wouldn’t be too far off base. I think this piece would make a great study piece to figure out age and probable region of origin. Perhaps some lab testing could solidify date estimates. An interesting artifact.
