Small Antique Gilded Box w Pierced Sterling Silver & MOP Lid & Miniature 54gThis a stunning box of gilded sterling silver. It has the vestiges of an English hallmark to rubbed to read. It looks to date to around the 1860-80s though this is just an intuitive estimate. It was most likely used to hold a cosmetic such as rouge or a face compound. The interior is gilded to match the outer box.It is a flat overall scallop shell shape with a flat rear edge, broad lobe sides and a serpentine ...front. The wall has a continuous frieze of scrolled leaves between margins of a “rope” pattern. The exquisite top is finely pierced with a rococo pattern of scroll and rose garland motifs. The centre has an escutcheon with a hand pained miniature of a period dressed lady under glass. This is painted directly on to a panel of mother of pearl set under the top and can be seen through all the pierce work. Some powder seems to have become lodged under the glass and is obscuring the miniature; we haven’t taken it apart to clean. It looks as if it mas made with this in mind. It entails a relatively easy process of bending the inner plate’s retaining pins and disassembling it to clean.It is good condition with no damage just a little wear with a lovely warm patina.
