Overview:x An exquisite16th to17th century bronze meditating Sukhothai Buddha Amulet, recovered from a stupa exc...avation in Mae Sot, a temple precinct in the Tak province near the Burmese border of northern Thailand. The amulet is beautifully rendered in an exalted profile, intricately carved with exacting detail. The piece while constructed of bronze is remarkably well preserved with little noticeable oxidation, which is due primarily to the origin of the piece being maintained in the low-humidity mountainous area surrounding Mae Sot. Buddha sits on a single level pedestal, measuring 2.58 inches(6.55cm) in height. Description: This particular bronze image is referred to as 'Sukhothai' type, which received a significant amount of influence from the Sri Lanka style art, which flourished in northern Thailand duing the14th century. Sukhothai artist blended these influences into a individualized level of artistry, creating a distinct style of Buddha sculptures. XXX The primary resemblance to Sri Lanka Buddhism is distinguished here by the image seated in posture of Subduing Mara, the 'Maravijaya' mudra, with the right hand on the right knee. Image Details: A spiritual image of Buddha seated cross-legged in Virasana posture. The bodies profile is with broad shoulders and slender waist, covered by a Sanghati Robe worn diagonally over the left shoulder, and is graced by a heavily-pleated flap draped to the navel, and marked with a fishtail-shaped notch. The right shoulder is left bare. The Buddha features an oval face, with almond-shaped eyes downcast, curved eyebrows meet above a prominent nose, and contoured lips with an exalted expression, appears smiling. The shell-like curls of the hair form a heart shaped line around the face, surmounted by a hemispherical 'Ushnisha', topped by a flamed ornament finial. XXX The entirety is supported by a plain single level pedestal without ornamentation. The bronze surface has naturally aged to a deep chocolate brown patina with traces of green malachite and soil encrustation on the surface. The core within the bronze is completely in tact, consisting of a tempered sandy-clay, with the bronze alloy being thick within the sculptures body. The figure remains in its original state as acquire with no condition issues. Data Observation: Excellent condition, with only minor imperfections such as casting flaws.
