Description: An exceptional antique amulet of Copper alloy, acquired from a temple precinct in the old Ayutthaya city of north central Thailand. Sculpted in the form of an enthroned meditating Buddha, the figure was primarily cast from a special process of 'smelting' metal, in accordance with the Buddhist Scripture of mixing 'magic' metals - a highly valuable composition for making supernatural amulets, along with extensive ceremonial prayer, practiced by the gathering of several temple monks, by which is said to enhance the power of the amulet with invincible and psychic powers. After production of the amulet - they are blessed and consecrated through infinte virtues and supreme meditative powers. Image Details: Sacred Temple Amulet of a meditating Ayutthaya Buddha enthroned with the image of Lersi carved in relief at the base. Buddha is depicted seated cross-legged in the 'Virasana' pose, one leg atop the sole of the other foot. The hands in mudra, with the left hand resting palm open on his lap, while the right hand forms the Bhumisparsa mudra, or Calling the Earth to Witness, gesture. The figure is modeled with a somewhat flattened profile, dressed in monks attire with the robe covering the left shoulders. The diaphanous garment itself is simplistic in design, secured by a belt at the waist shown at the front. xxxx The face is portrayed with a refine remote appearance with slit-shaped eyes lowered in meditation, arched eyebrows above a prominent nose, a well shaped mouth with an insipid smile, and elongated earlobes rest short of the shoulders. The head is covered in rasp-like hair curls surmounted by a domed-shaped 'Ushnisha' and tall ornament finial. xxxx The figure of Lersi ornaments the base as an 'Ascetic' or Hermit sage who is a forest dwelling visionary with supernatural powers with the ability to make philosphical worldly predictions. Lersi's face reflects a serene expression, characterized by a long tangled beard, mustache, and hair pulled back from his face, gathered in a domed topknotsupported by a band. Elongated ears are pointed, his head rest on his hands, one crossing over the other, and incised with floral ornamentation to both sides. The surface of the bronze has a naturally aged oxidized patina of reddish-brown developing throughout, with a tempered sandy-clay core within. Thai people believe this particular image is especially powerful in securing great wealth and fortune for its owner or possessor.
