Antwerp 1920 Summer Olympic Games Participation Medal. This is a better than average example, which I would judge to be in close to extremely fine (EF) condition, but please study my photos and form your own opinion of its grade. There is no case.Made from Bronze, Diameter 60 mm, Thickness approx 3 mm, Weight 73.8 gm, Mintage 6, 000, Designer Pierre Theunis.This is just one of a long and highly collectable line of Olympic Participation Medals, awarded to athlet...es, judges and other officials at virtually all the modern Olympic and Winter Olympic Games, beginning in Athens in 1896. The Antwerp medal is one of the hardest to find of all the summer Olympic Participation Medals.The 1920 Games were awarded to Antwerp to honour the suffering that had been inflicted on the Belgian people during the Great War.The obverse shows a charioteer riding a biga (small chariot) drawn by two prancing horses. Floating above is the angelic depiction of "flying victory", holding out a laurel crown towards the charioteer. The reverse has the goddess, Nike, standing atop a platform as victorious athletes await their crowning. In the background is the city of Antwerp. The designer’s name, P. THEUNIS, and date, MCMXX are also inscribed on the reverse.Please note: I have seen poor copies of this and other OPMs being auctioned off as genuine on eBay, by sellers in Bulgaria, Cyprus and elsewhere.
