This is a superb example of a very rare Vintage Reuge Music Box, as the Reuge music box mechanism here was produced for one "run" only, meaning for 1-year only, in 1970, because it is the music from the musical "Hair"--"Good Morning Starshine, " & "Aquarius, " & the sound is awesome!
The gorgeous wood music box is made of beautiful Swiss walnut wood, & its design is also special, in that it has dovetailed wood joints interlocking--no nails are used in the joints--&a...mp; the beauty & symmetry is fantastic.
The box measures 5 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 2 1/2" Tall, weighs 1 1/4 lbs, & is in excellent vintage condition. Excellent vintage condition means the piece is in the condition consistent with its age.This is an extremely rare music box mechanism that was made for 1 year only, 1970, by Reuge, & indeed it is an heirloom-quality vintage antique that is meant to be used & enjoyed--cherished--by generations; if you love its music you will not be disappointed!
This particular Reuge mechanism was made in Switzerland, & is a "changing" one, allowing you to do more with it: There is a brass sliding on/off button on the front of the box. When in the "on" position it plays until the spring is unwound. When in the "off" position it will stop at the end of the current tune. Also of note is the fact that with this type mechanism you can play the music with the lid closed.
When these rare mechanisms do rarely come up for sale, they can bring fantastic prices--for instance on ebay this exact same Reuge changing music box mechanism in a custom-made designer-signed wood box, when listed, can sell for $1200.00 by a noted expert Reuge music box Seller.
