LOVELY VICTORIAN SILVER BOX (CIGARS?) BY JOHN LINEGAR - BIRMINGHAM 1870 - 5.49oz LOVELY VICTORIAN SILVER BOX (CIGARS?) BY JOHN LINEGAR - BIRMINGHAM 1870 - 5.49oz This is a fabulous looking Victorian decorated sterling (.925) silver box as you can see. It has a gilt washed interior and it was probably intended to house and carry cigars but it would be ideal for all sorts of other purposes too. It has ...a stylish a period monogram centrally on the front cover as pictured. The box (or case) measures approximately 5" long by 2.5" wide and it is about 1.25" deep. The inner dimensions are approximately 4.75" by 2.25" and each half is about 0.50" deepIt has been assayed in Birmingham during 1870 by the silversmith John Linegar and it weighs 5.49 troy ounces or 170.8 grams. I have pictured the assay marks close up for you below .There are a few signs of age and use as you might expect after so many years. There are the usual light, faint minor scuffs and scratches that all silver objects such as this tend to attract over the years and three of the four corners have shallow edge dents, presumably caused when the box has been dropped a few times during it's long life The remaining corner has a slight edge disfiguration where the lid and the base meet but the two halves still fit together and the lid closes firmly and tightly. It would probably benefit from good polish all over to fully restore former glory. This very useful, collectable and attractive Victorian solid silver (cigar) case / box is sure to draw some admiring comments when in use!It is offered here in a used antique condition, exactly as pictured and with no reserve.
