You are bidding on an extremely rare, 1920s Barry Collapsible Bass Drum with original Painted Drum Head. These drums are highly sought, and rarely can be found in their original condition with painted head. It is a unique part of jazz drum history. Please note the following description of this set:

Head is signed “Ross. “VG condition; NO TEARS BatterHead: 28" original head in good condition; 1-2 very small/minor splits near metal hoops and creases. 1.5” metal collapsible hoops, Gold Plated –notched areas on hoops for T-rods. OriginalOval Case in Good to VG condition. Summary: Drum is complete, fully functional andoperational; All original.

History of Barry Drum Company:The idea for the folding bass drum had firstbeen patented by the ingenious William A. Barry in 1917, who had gone on toform a company to manufacture them specially, based in Philadelphia, beginningproduction in 1919. Barry sensibly reasoned that at the time, all but a veryfew drummers used public transport to get to gigs, and as theJazz craze swept America and then the world in the following years, large bassdrums would be an essential part of the drum set, not just for their own soundbut simply as a large and steady object on which to mount smaller instruments. The collapsible drum set was designed and produced by theBarry Drum Manufacturing Company of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the early part of thecentury. Recommended for use by traveling drummers in dance bands andvaudeville orchestras, the set is highly portable. The bass drum andits calfskin heads fold up so that they fit inside the elliptical case withthe snare drum. TheBarry Drum Company relied almost solely on its patented collapsible drum set. Inaddition to its unique portability, it was also the first head bass drumto do away with the flesh hoop. The round metal or wooden disc thatholds the drum head onto the drum. Lug casings are then fast.... Instead, thehead is secured to the rim, the metal hoop thatkeeps the drum head in place. It fastens down onto the drum head by screws(by means of a screw-tightened metal band that fits in arecessed groove.) Thedrums were made in three sizes – 26″, 28″ and 30″. According to the company’sadvertising, the drums were “light in weight, perfect in tone, durable inconstruction, beautiful in design, and simple in operation. You can set thedrum up in three minutes and take it apart in less than one.” As Barry’s drums provedpopular and other drum manufacturers began to offer their own variations onBarry’s innovative design, the company branched out into making various other, more conventional models of drums, including some fine snare drums which arehighly prized today. During their heyday Barry drums were used and endorsed bySonny Greer and Chauncey Morehouse among other ‘name’ drummers. Sadly, however, the Barry company went bust along with many hundreds of others in the GreatDepression of the early ‘thirties.TERMS:
