Here’s a secret: if you own a genuine Les Paul guitar (or even a reissue or historic) you need to own one of these amps. Even at low to mid volume the sound is pure vintage heaven. Warm, soulful, and perfect for blues.
Turn the volume to just below 3, and you get that sweet spot with a slight BB King clip. Now set it to... over 3. The signal instantly saturates, rewarding you with awesome sustain and near-violin-like tones. Crank it up a little further, to 4 or 5, and you’re blown away by that nasty funk-with-an-attitude, reminiscent of Buddy Guy or Joe B at their best, or Ry Cooder with his slide. Plus each of the two channels has its own controls.
Even better, click the original footswitch. The on-board tremolo (adjustable for both speed & depth) was far ahead of Fender’s for its time, with a sweet Leslie-like pulse. Hooked to your LP or ES-335/45 you’re transported to blues nirvana. Even Strats and Teles sound like they were made for this amp.
And check out the beautiful condition of this gem. The deep brown “pebbled” tolex of the top is near perfect. Plus I haven’t even seen another vintage Les Paul GA-40 with a correct handle and intact brass brackets. Or one not scuffed and shredded to death.
While it does have a few little nicks & blems on the lower tan tolex, it’s way better than any others I’ve seen for sale. And from inside to out, original speaker to Gibson gold logo, it’s rock solid, with no missing parts. Other than a couple of little spots of touch-up on the lower corners (see pics) the amp is in awesome original condition.
The control panel is super nice. Check out the pics. The graphics, letters, and numbers are all there and easy to read, along with the cool dark-brown chickenhead knobs. The original grille is in excellent condition too, and the big “L.P.” signature overlay unbroken and gleaming.
Inside, the clean Jensen P12Q speaker, combined with its 8 tubes and four 6V6-GT power circuitry gives you sound other vintage amps can only dream of. Best of all, I just had the amp serviced, replacing some of the caps and resistors with the best money can buy. Meaning that from the moment you open the carton and plug in, you’re in monster-tone wonderland.
Whether you play blues, rock, r & b, or jazz, or just want to capture that 1950’s golden-era vibe, this is the amp you’ve been waiting for. Complete with its original footswitch.
