Extra NotesThe Sevres factory was founded in the middle of the 18th century as the Royal French factory and produced high quality and very expensive wares. Copies started to be made almost as soon as the factory was set up and by the end of the 19th century there was a significant industry in Paris manufacturing Sevres style wares. This figure is made of bisque, which is porcelain without a glaze, allowing the detailing of the modelling to be seen and it also produces a good imitation of marble. The design for this piece is based on a bronze figure produced in the 18th century by Claude Michel, a French sculptor known as Clodion. The copies of Sevres pieces outnumber the originals by a great margin and this figure is typical of the good quality copies being made, there is a demand for such pieces, but they are not as valuable as the originals.
